Several years ago, while searching for that perfect
something to fill a barren spot just beyond my entry, I haunted vintage
stores and antique shops, hoping something would catch my eye.
One afternoon, a young woman, seeking to be helpful, showed
me a small mahogany table. While it appeared lovely to look upon, it seemed
much too perfect, much too ornate to fit among my ordinary furnishings. So, I
kept looking.
One morning, I drove by a neighborhood tag sale and spotted a
blanket chest—scuffed and flawed and very old. Perfect! Plunking down $20, I lugged it home.
It is always filled with afghans, blankets, and quilts—enough to keep my family and guests warm all
winter. The fact that its hinges and locks aren't in working order is okay with me. I've never bothered fixing them, although I haven't ruled it out either. Truth is, I love it, just the way it is.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this small partition is (feel free to enlighten me), but, for now, I have vintage pillowcases there, taking a rest from being displayed.

ReplyDeleteOh it is so pretty! I have 2 chests. One is mine (it was my hubby's grandmother's) and it is filled with my daughters baby things and the other is on loan. My SIL doesn't have room for her Mom's chest, so I am using it in my rec room. They are such a great piece of furniture. Kit

ReplyDeleteYears ago I found a old blanket box in my parents shed. It was in a poor state, I had some Andy Pandy material so I cut them out and stuck them all over this box, it was a toy box for years now I keep games and puzzles in it.

I have an old Pennsylvania blanket box, new to me in 1975, but certainly very old even by then. The hinges were broken and after all these years they remain so. Right now it's at the foot of the guest bed, but it's been in hallways, living rooms, our bedroom, the dining room - it's been the most useful piece of furniture.

What a wonderful blanket chest. I have one in my garage that has been in the family for decades and your post reminds me that I need to bring it inside and put it to good use.

ReplyDeleteI love it! I have been keeping my eye open for just such a chest myself for years. I have the spot for it, and I know exactly what I want, a chest like this one. My grandmother had one at the top of her stairs, and I always think of her when I see them. Someday. Someday.

ReplyDeleteSarah, my sister made the purple & white afghan, and my mom made the ivory one. They are both excellent with a crochet needle. I stumble around with it, but they're true experts.
