Several years ago, while searching for that perfect
something to fill a barren spot just beyond my entry, I haunted vintage
stores and antique shops, hoping something would catch my eye.
One afternoon, a young woman, seeking to be helpful, showed
me a small mahogany table. While it appeared lovely to look upon, it seemed
much too perfect, much too ornate to fit among my ordinary furnishings. So, I
kept looking.
One morning, I drove by a neighborhood tag sale and spotted a
blanket chest—scuffed and flawed and very old. Perfect! Plunking down $20, I lugged it home.
It is always filled with afghans, blankets, and quilts—enough to keep my family and guests warm all
winter. The fact that its hinges and locks aren't in working order is okay with me. I've never bothered fixing them, although I haven't ruled it out either. Truth is, I love it, just the way it is.
I'm not sure what the purpose of this small partition is (feel free to enlighten me), but, for now, I have vintage pillowcases there, taking a rest from being displayed.
Do you have a few favorite things around your home? If so, you might do what I'm doing and link up with the lovely Claudia over at Mockingbird Hill Cottage for "A Favorite Thing."

Hi Dayle- I am back from my bloggy break and playing catch up. I LOVE your old blanket chest and have always wanted one myself. I don't know what the little compartment is for....maybe the owner hid her candy stash in there?;>) xo Diana
ReplyDeleteLove that beautiful blanket chest, Dayle. I think we are very alike - we like worn, old, vintage and loved. That's a beautiful piece. Thanks so much for joining in this week!

Any changes to your chest would make it less than the perfect piece it is. Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat was a perfect choice for the entryway, Dayle. So glad you found the chest. Maybe candles were stored in the partition? Hmmmmm. I wonder. Susan
ReplyDeleteOh it is so pretty! I have 2 chests. One is mine (it was my hubby's grandmother's) and it is filled with my daughters baby things and the other is on loan. My SIL doesn't have room for her Mom's chest, so I am using it in my rec room. They are such a great piece of furniture. Kit

ReplyDeleteYears ago I found a old blanket box in my parents shed. It was in a poor state, I had some Andy Pandy material so I cut them out and stuck them all over this box, it was a toy box for years now I keep games and puzzles in it.
ReplyDeleteMerle.....
I have an old Pennsylvania blanket box, new to me in 1975, but certainly very old even by then. The hinges were broken and after all these years they remain so. Right now it's at the foot of the guest bed, but it's been in hallways, living rooms, our bedroom, the dining room - it's been the most useful piece of furniture.
ReplyDeleteBlessings on the beautiful Autumn day.
ReplyDeleteYour blog is such an uplifting destination. I love the inclusion of scripture...clearly, it is the foundation in your life, by it's presence.
What a wonderful blanket chest. I have one in my garage that has been in the family for decades and your post reminds me that I need to bring it inside and put it to good use.
Thank you for your lovely comment and visit to my blog. It is such fun sharing new ideas...and, all with things we have tucked away around our homes.
My God richly bless your week!

What a beautiful find and a wonderful price! Looks like the perfect fit for your entrance and it's useful too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping in for a visit and becoming a follower. I look forward to reading more of your posts. Have a good week.

Lovely ... just as it is! I think what's neat is the memory you've associated with its find ... when you least expected it!
ReplyDeleteWishing you a wonderful new week!
Hi Dayle, it's so nice to meet you! Thanks for leaving a kind comment on my blog. Your blanket chest is lovely...I love vintage things! And what a perfect place to store extra blankets and quilts. I can't wait to look through the rest of your blog and get to know you better!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely old blanket chest and at such a great price! What's not to love?
ReplyDeleteI love chests. I have an old hope chest that sits at the foot of my bed that I adore. Yours is gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI love it! I have been keeping my eye open for just such a chest myself for years. I have the spot for it, and I know exactly what I want, a chest like this one. My grandmother had one at the top of her stairs, and I always think of her when I see them. Someday. Someday.
ReplyDeletePerfect choice.
Oh, I do love your chest -- it's a perfect place for those old family photos! Did you make the afghans, or are they finds too? I enjoyed reading your article too!
ReplyDeleteSarah, my sister made the purple & white afghan, and my mom made the ivory one. They are both excellent with a crochet needle. I stumble around with it, but they're true experts.
DeleteHi Dayle,
ReplyDeleteSo nice to meet you! The chest is so very vintage. What a great place for it, easy access, I assume, to all who might desire some extra coziness. Maybe the little compartment is for lanterns or books. Whatever the case, it's practical and perfect!
Thanks for stopping by today. Hoping to get a chance to have a look around your lovely blog.
Have a great week.
Poppy

ReplyDeleteThat is such a beautiful blanket chest, Dayle, and what a bargain! I think it looks lovely in that space and I wouldn't change it at all. Wishing you a lovely weekend!
