Friendships Far and Near ~ Simple Pleasures

Today, I celebrate the simple pleasure of friendship, and that includes all of you. Whether you come here each week, or just pop in whenever you can, your appearance has a way of brightening my day and making me smile. Although we've never met, I feel as if I know you, and I care what happens to you. And I like to think you feel the same way about me. The way I see it, we're all very much alike, for we all have dreams and hopes. We experience happy occasions, and those times when our world just falls apart. But whether we're in the midst of the ordinary, or something much more perplexing, it's comforting to know there's a community of bloggers who take time to reach across the miles and, in just a sentence or two, lift the load and the spirits of mere strangers ... and, yet, we aren't strangers at all. That's the nice thing about  kindred spirits. Your hearts connect in ways that only hearts can. So, thank you for being out there in cyberspace, and for walking alongside of me. My journey is easier because of you.

Do you have special people in your life who make your journey a bit easier? Whatever simple pleasure you've discovered this week, you know I want to know about it. If you’re here for the first time, please click on the Simple Pleasures tab above for important information before linking up.

Calendars With Oomph ~ Simple Pleasures

I like calendars that offer daily surprises, not just a blank square in which to scribble appointments or birthdays. And every December, I set out to find that perfect one to put on my desk at home. Some years I’m not overjoyed with what’s available, but not this year. This year was a winner—a small calendar designed by Robin Pickens, with a theme called, “Seize the day.” Every morning, I peel off the previous day’s date, to reveal some meaningful quote, accompanied by delightful artwork. It may seem a bit odd, but I find this little calendar to be a true simple pleasure. I look forward to the discovery every morning.

When I peeled off yesterday’s page, would you look at what I found? Could the quote be more perfect for the occasion?

Have you discovered a simple pleasure this week? If you have, I’d love to hear about it. If you're new to this party, please click on the Simple Pleasures page (see tab above) before linking up. There is important information there, and a few specific guidelines that need to be followed. Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to visit me here. It's always a joy to see you.

The Day I Ran Away From Home : A Love Story

I stood at the front door, looking out over the cold wet lawn. It had been a soggy couple of weeks. Overhead, the sky stretched wide and gray. The big oak, stripped barren, pointed crooked fingers toward the heavens as if pleading for the sun’s warmth. I echoed that sentiment. Would the sun ever shine again?

I don’t know what came over me, but in that moment, I longed to run away from home, to an exotic place filled with sunshine and sea, where no one knew my name, where the wind blew through my hair, and umbrellas were used only for shade.

Have you ever wished, even for a split second, to drive off to places unknown, alone? To a place where you don’t have to deal with the same old issues that keep turning up through the years, seemingly never to be resolved?

There was that time I actually did run away, sort of. The details went something like this.

It was late one evening. I don’t recall what started it, but The Man and I had a very big and ugly argument. We both said things we didn’t mean and, in the end, I said, “I’m leaving,” and he said, “Good. The sooner, the better.”

I threw a few things in a small suitcase and slammed the door behind me, not having a clue where I was going. After driving in circles for several minutes, I stopped in at my local grocery to pick up some personal items I’d forgotten to pack, in my heated rush to get out of the house.

But before I got down the first aisle, my cell phone rang. It was my daughter calling. Grown and living in her own place, she was unaware of the situation. I answered the phone and she said, “Hey, Mom. Where are you?”

Instantly, I knew she knew. Something in her voice gave it away.

“Hey, sweetie. I’m out for a bit. What’s up?”

“Well, where are you?” Persistence is her middle name.

“Just out. Why?”

“Mom, Dad is worried about you.”

“How can he be worried about me? I’ve been gone a total of 20 minutes. Did he call you?” I was perturbed.

“No, he didn’t call me. I called and asked to talk to you and yes, he is really worried about you.”

“Well, he should have thought of that sooner,” I said, my anger returning, remembering all of the hateful things he’d spouted. “Listen, sweetie. I really need to get off the phone. You can tell your dad that I’m fine. I’m just fine. I love you, and I’ll call you tomorrow.”

I hung up and lingered in the store, trying to get my thoughts together. I had money, so I decided I’d go to a nearby hotel and attempt to get some sleep. Lord knew I needed it.

By the time I paid for my purchases, it was much later than I liked to be out alone. I’d parked a good distance from the store and practically ran to my car. Once inside, I locked the doors, cranked the engine, and started to drive off.

But I couldn’t see out. A large square of white paper was stuck under my windshield wiper. What on earth?

As my eyes adjusted to the dark, it became clear. There, on a piece of paper, drawn with a black marker, was a big heart encircling these words: “Please come home!! I miss you! I love you!”

Before I could process it all, a truck pulled up alongside of me. Hanging out the window was none other than my husband. Apparently, he’d called out the search party. Beside him, grinning from ear-to-ear, sat my daughter.

And that’s when I started laughing. I laughed so hard I cried. Despite my best efforts to run away from home, the wild and zany man who loved me had somehow managed to track me down. I couldn’t very well leave now, not with him sitting there with puppy-dog eyes.

As I followed him out of the parking lot, I realized how foolish we’d been, arguing over insignificant things, and how blessed I was that the man I loved most in the world loved me back and had come looking for me and found me, and was leading me home again.

The consciousness of loving and being loved
brings a warmth and richness to life that nothing else can bring.

Simple Pleasures ~ Traveling Together

I know. I know. I’ve been a very bad blogger lately. I’m so far behind on visiting my favorite bloggers that I’ve resigned to never catching up, at least not for another week or two.

I told you last week that I’ve been a busy bee. What I haven’t told you is that this happy retiree accepted a short-term work assignment the last week of January, and I’ve been blowing and going since then. The best part is I’m working alongside my twin sister, which makes for interesting days in more ways than one.

Here's how it happened. The Man and I are between trips and, well, boredom had reached an all-time high in the cabin. It was cabin fever gone wild. So, when twin sis called and asked if I’d be interested in taking a 30-day temp assignment for the next few weeks, I jumped on it, which means I leave home early in the morning, and return after 5:00 in the evening. I haven’t worked outside the home since retiring, almost three years ago, and I guess I forgot how consuming a job is. LOL!

So, now you know what I’ve been up to, and even though I’m a busy bee these days, I'm happy to host the Simple Pleasures party, and I hope you all will join me. If I’m late getting around to you again this week, just know I’ll be by whenever I can squeeze in some leisure time, because one thing I don’t do is rush through all the wonderful simple pleasures each week. That requires some relaxation and slow-going, just what this party is intended to do.

So, what’s my simple pleasure for this week? But of course, carpooling with my twin sister! We live down the street from each other, so I drive one week and she drives the next. And we gab all the way to the office.

Warm Hands On Cold Days ~ Simple Pleasures

Welcome to another Simple Pleasures event. I've been a busy bee this week and haven't blogged, or been around to visit any of you. I'm really sorry about that, but such is my life at the moment. Things should return to normal in a few weeks.

If you're new here, please visit the Simple Pleasures page (see tab above) before linking up. There is important information there, and a few specific guidelines that need to be followed. Thanks for taking time out of your busy day to visit me here. It's always a joy to see you.

I will be late getting around to mingle with all of you this week, but I will be by at some point. Your posts always make me smile. So, go ahead and make my day!

Please Note: Because of the extreme weather in some places, Mr. Linky may have some issues throughout the week. I will not be around to monitor things on Thursday, so if you have problems linking up, please be patient and keep trying.

I know this doesn't look like much of a simple pleasure, but let me assure you, it is. Here in Southeast Texas, we don't get a lot of extreme winter temperatures, at least not compared to those north of the Mason Dixon Line, but my leather gloves are never far away during cold snaps. And we are having a cold snap this week. I don't know if they're right, but the weather reports say we might even get a little snow before the weekend. If we do or if we don't, my trusty leather gloves add a touch of warmth on cold days.

What's your simple pleasure this week?
